Dealing with Disabilities

PDFPrintE-mail

There are many types of disabilities; mental (e.g., cognitive or learning disabilities), emotional, and physical. So too are disabilities more personal in nature. Dealing with your disability or that of a loved one can be challenging. Those not prepared for these situations can experience a wide range of emotional and spiritual problems. It is not uncommon to experience frustration, anger, denial, grief, resentment, and/or depression. Individuals may isolate themselves, shut down emotionally, or report difficulties with anger management. Sometimes dealing with a disability can shake one’s faith. Disabilities occur because of an event such as a stroke or accident, come on over time, or something present since birth. Disabilities can lead to depression, communication problems, family difficulties, and other issues.

Our Care Counselors can help you, or those you care for, learn how to better cope with disabilities. Learn the importance of good self-care, the need for social support, and to communicate in a manner in which your needs are met.
