Characterized by a compulsion to eat or avoid eating, eating disorders negatively impact one’s physical and mental health. The most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, respectively; with a significant diagnostic overlap between both disorders.
Anorexia nervosa
Anorexia nervosa is defined by deliberate and sustained weight loss; driven by an irrational fear of becoming overweight, and a distorted body image.
Bulimia nervosa
Bulimia nervosa is defined by recurring, cyclical pattern of binge eating (uncontrollable bursts of overeating) followed by guilt and behaviors to “compensate” for the binge, such as dieting, over-exercising, purging or excessive ingestion of laxatives to compensate for the excessive intake of calories.
